These came from Lena B. Mills mailto:lenamil@iquest.net

Dear Dan,

It is good to hear from you. I see your are acquainted with the

Keeney-Bersot book by Virginia Coats. I got much of my material from it also. The descendants of my grandmother, Margaret Schenck, however are my own family records. I'll send three generations, not more unless you ask for them. It is a large family.

Reviewing your records I find only one error. Winifred Schenck married

Herschel PEERY, not PERRY. What I am sending will supplement what you have.

So glad to find you on the internet. I'm new at it and find it rather

exciting. Thank You. Lena b. Millls

Notes for Sarah Margaret KEENEY

OBITUARY: Read at her funeral and written by her son-in-law, Walter Barnett.

Sarah Margaret Schenck, daughter of Franklin and Matilda Keeney, was born near Pittsboro in Hendricks County September 13, 1868, seventh in a family of nine children. An older sister died when Margaret was sixteen, leaving a four-year-old boy, whom she gave to Margaret to care for, and her next twelve years were devoted to being as good a mother as possible to this orphan, George Money, of Avon, who would be here today if his health permitted.

She was married to Lewis Orlando Schenck on March 24, 1895 and went to live on his farm nearby. Here were born their four children, Muriel, Winifred, Leona and Lawrence.

Needing more land to add to their small farm, and finding none available in the area, they sold the place and moved to the farm southeast of West Newton where she has lived ever since. This was in 1908, and her mother, who lived to be ninety-two, was heart broken at the removal. Especially so, as she said, "Mag was the only one who could get along with all the rest of the family." Incidentally, she was the only one of her family to live anywhere but in their home community.

Their son, Lawrence, died at the age of fourteen and left a place in lives of the parents that was never filled. Then in 1935 her husband died, and the past twenty-five years she has lived with Leona and Hubert Westerfield on the home farm, where she welcomed all the many friends and relatives who came to see her. She was proud of the fact that she had missed only the first of the sixty Schenck reunions that had been held.

"Aunt Mag", as most of her kinfolk called her, became a member of the Church of the Brethren near her home when she was a girl and retained her membership there until the church was laid down some years ago. However, the family began attending the Friends Meeting at West Newton as soon as they moved to this community and she came regularly as long as she was able. Not many years ago she transferred her church membership and became the oldest member of West Newton Friends Meeting (Quaker). She was especially active in the women's group and uncounted was the number of quilts she pieced and helped to quilt for the Busy Bees and the Country Women's Service Club, of which she was a member, as well as those for the family. Each grandchild received a quilt as a wedding present.

After some months of failing health Margaret Schenck left us December 5, 1960, having been for several years the last surviving member of her own and her husband's generation. But for a long time she will be remembered with love by her three daughters, fourteen grandchildren, and forty-four great granchildren.

Notes for Lewis Orlando SCHENCK

BIO: Lewis Orlando was known as Landy. He was thirty-three by the time he had earned a small farm north of Pittsboro and could take a wife. By 1908 he

was needing more land. Finding none near, he sold the farm and bought one southeast of West Newton IN where he lived the remainder of his life and where Margaret, "Mag", lived for many years more.

Landy raised fine Percheron horses and Jersey cattle. (His brother, Allen, preferred Belgians, according to Virgil Hoppes.)

Many of the Schenck Reunions were held in the shade of the sugar maple trees In their front yard. The trees are gone now--they, too, die of old age.

Grandpa was rather progressive for his day. Before electricity came to his rural area he pumped water with a gasoline engine for a gravity-fed water system for the house. I remember that in the early twenties he had a

Maxwell open touring car. Later, when his hearing and eysight were bad, his horse and buggy was one of few left on the road.

Grandma bought groceries and household items, even fabrics, from a huckster who came by once a week. Some staples were always on the wagon, others items were ordered the week before. The huckster didn't leave his

wagon--business was done at the roadside.

OBITUARY read at his funeral:

Seventy-three years ago on January 3rd a son was born to Daniel and Margaret Schenck who lived between Lebanon and Royalton. He was named Lewis Orlando. There were three brothers and four sisters in the family, and all but two, a twin sister and a younger one, passed on before him. His early life was spent in the manner of most country boys of that time, and he learned the habit of thrift and hard work, which have since been features of his.

He deeply admired and respected his mother, and even in later years, he could not speak of her without a touch of emotion in his voice. As a young man he set out to earn a home, and by persistant efforts, acquired a farm north of Pittsboro, where he took his bride, Sarah Margaret Keeney, just forty years ago next month.

Twenty-seven years ago, they sold their farm and moved to their present home. The only son, a lad of fourteen, was called home about fifteen years ago, and with his passing, the father lost one of his chief aims in life, to give the boy a better chance than he himself had had, and to make a partner of him, as well as a chum.

Throughout the latter half of his life, "Landy", as he was known to friends and neighbors, was afflicted with an increasing handicap of deafness. Nine years ago he suffered a paralytic stroke, and his eyesight failed

rapidly just recently. These placed him under burdens which all of us hope never to experience, and we can never realize what a handicap they were to him.

He was brought up under the influence of the Baptist Church and his mother's faith was his own, attending church as long as he could hear and take part in the singing, for he loved to sing. Deep rooted convictions of right

and wrong were a part of his character. Few people knew that he was a regular and liberal contributor to the Riley Hospital fund.

Three daughters will remember father as one who believed that honesty was not only the best policy, but the only one to be considered. The twelve grandchildren will cherish the memory of a grandpa who loved to enter into their frolics and was companion to them. The nieces, nephews and other relatives know how strong to him were family ties, and how he enjoyed their association. The friends and neighbors realize the community has lost a good citizen.

She married on 5 May 1918 in West Newton, Marion, Indiana Walter James BARNETT [6], born 14 Dec 1895 in West Newton, Marion, Indiana; died 6 Jul 1977 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, son of Elmer Jesse BARNETT [13] and Emma Lena BLACK [14] .

Notes for Alta Muriel SCHENCK

CHURCH: West Newton Friends

EDUCATION: West Newton High School (1914) Purdue University (3 years)

OCCUPATION: Homemaker

BIO: Muriel came to the West Newton area with her family when she was twelve. From then through West Newton HIgh School she was a classmate of Walter Barnett. She was a home economics major at Purdue University for three years before she married Walter. She was a full time homemaker, assisting her husband with the farm chores, and making all the clothes for herself and five daughters. She was also the family barber.

After the girls left home and the demands on her time were less pressing she pieced and quilted many, many quilts for the family and for the West Newton Friends women's society. At this she was an artist, making scraps into a thing of beauty.

Muriel was a practical and frugal person exemplifying the old motto: "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

Notes for Walter James BARNETT

CHURCH: West Newton Friends (lifelong)

EDUCATION: West Newton High School,

OCCUPATION: Farming; Dairy Inspector, Indianapolis Board of Health

BIO: Walter was a brilliant student. A special interest was geography. It is said that he knew the states and their capitals and population by the time he started school. In early life he traveled via reading of other's travels.

Before his death he had been to every state except Alaska and two trips abroad, one on a Quaker Heritage Tour to England, and one to Kenya where he and Muriel spent six months working with their daughter, Carol, and her husband, Robert Mills. Enroute home they visited the Holy Land, Rome, and Switzerland. In his youth he had wished to go to Kenya as a missionary doctor. For health and ecoonomic reasons that did not materialize. The six months on Friends Africa Mission were a highlight of his life.

Walter and Muriel both graduated from West Newton High School in 1914. Muriel went three years to Purdue as a home economics major. Walter attended Earlham College a short time as well as a short term at Ohio State. They were married in her parents home south of West Newton in 1918. They lived on rented farms until they built the house on two acres of the farm on which he had been born, (Now 6328 South High School Road, Indianapolis 46221.)

Walter raised fine Ayrshire cattle and showed them at county and state fairs. After he gave up farming he raised strawberries and worked as a dairy inspector for the Indianapolis Board of Health.

They also raised daughters. To console him in his disappointment when his third daughter arrived a friend suggested that someone should have girls for Leland Mills' sons. Those three later married three of Leland Mills' sons. Walter loved baseball and it was a disappointment to him not to have hoys with whom to play the game. His first four grandchildren were boys-- he had them playing baseball when they were pre-schoolers.

Walter was a sixth generation member of West Newton Friends Meeting. He sang bass in the choir and served at various times as treasurer, trustee, caretaker and teacher.

He liked to read and read aloud to his family on winter evenings and, after retirement, to Muriel as she quilted.

Children of Alta Muriel SCHENCK and Walter James BARNETT were as follows:

+ 6 i Lena Margaret3 BARNETT [2], born 18 Jan 1920 in Camby, Marion, Indiana. She married Lowell Ernest MILLS [1].

+ 7 ii Wilma Ruth3 BARNETT [9], born 14 Mar 1921 in Camby, Marion, Indiana. She married David Sheldon MILLS [90].

+ 8 iii Carol Alta3 BARNETT [10], born 14 Apr 1924 in Valley Mills, Marion, Indiana. She married Robert Winton MILLS [92].

Lived in Calvin, ND and Grand Forks, ND, husband was a bank cashier still alive in 1981

Per letter from brother Charles to cousin Orion dated 1-28-1953, was living in Grand Forks ND had three boys and two girls (oldest boy died young)

This was written by Annabelle (Keeney) Thoreson, I received it from Ray Keeney on 05 September, 1998. DLK

James Barney Keeney, born in Hendricks Co., Indiana, where the town of Rainstown is now Located. The youngest of nine children, four sisters and four brothers. His ancestors were Irish, Scotch and English: staying in Germany for a short time.

James Barney Keeney was married first to Elizabeth Shirley, had one son Aurora. His wife died in childbirth. Them married Martha Coulter, from Pennsylvania, and they had six children. Charles, Samuel, Lloyd, Alton Annabelle (myself) and George.

After farming in Indiana we moved to North Dakota in 1896 and rented land near Cando, North Dakota...while there he and his second son, Charles, filed on 160 acres each, near a lake, which was later named Rock Lake, 25 miles north of Cando.

They built a sod house and barn in which we lived until we could build frame structures. They bought horses, cows, pigs, sheep and chickens. Later he purchased another 160 acres, bought a threshing rig and worked for all the neighbors. Also had his own blacksmith shop and did the neighbors work. We had a smokehouse and cured our own meat. He had the country post office to which mail was delivered every other day. Farming was so slow those days often had to finish threshing after the snow had fallen. He had a cook car that took care of the crews and grain haulers, taking their meals at the houses where they were working.

In winter we often had three-day blizzards and kept snow shovels in the house to dig our way out, as the drifts wee so high. The boys had a wire leading from the house to the barn to follow to feed the livestock. We had coal stoves and oil lamps. The boys would drive to the closest town for fuel and staples, which took a day each way. The boys walking beside the sled to keep warm. Not unusual to have 40 degrees below zero temperatures.

Our school term was only three months, during the summer. For recreation in summer the neighbors young folks would gather at our home for baseball, horse racing, hunting and fishing, My mother having dinner ready for everyone. We found many tomahawks and bison trails.

We had to plow firebreaks to protect the buildings from prairie fires, which we often had in dry weather.

The boys each had musical instruments and played for the country-dances, entire families attended.

We attended the Dunkard (now Brethren) services each Sunday, held in the little schoolhouse 2½ miles from our home. Then in later years we attended the Seventh Day Adventist camp meetings, held every evening for two weeks in a large tent.

Mr. Jim Hill built a branch line of the Great Northern railroad, going northwest out of Devil's Lake, small towns began to spring up along the line, one being Rock Lake, 2½ miles from our home. Mr. Hill offered to finance my father in building a hotel in Rock Lake, which he did, located near the depot. We moved into town. The train left Devil's Lake one day and went to the end of the line, Hansboro, north of us, returning the next day. Very few cars those days so the sales men would stop at our hotel overnight. The cost of a meal was .50¢ and a room for the night .50¢. They called my parents "Pa" and "Ma". "Ma" always had "left-over" pie, cake, for evening lunches (free). The train crew came to the kitchen for lunch while the train stopped. free, but anytime any of the family took the train to Devil's Lake we were not charged a fare.

We had a very wee equipped butcher shop which the second son, Sam, operated. This served the hotel and the towns' people. We put up ice in the winter and had an icehouse. With the advent of more cars business became poor and my father sold the hotel and rented some land, back to farming.

While in the hotel I was married to Peter Thoreson. We lived in Calvin, North Dakota. where five children were born: Majorie, Lucille, Peter JR, (passed away at the age of 8), Bradford and Samuel.

Marjorie married Forrest Stephens (2 girls. Jill and Susan).

Lucille married Nels A. Brakke (2 boys and 1 girl, Brad, Jon and Barbara).

Brad Thoreson married Betty Sue Smutz, (3 boys and 1 girl, Luanne, Randy, Douglas and Robert James).

Samuel married to Virginia Batson, (2 boys and 1 girl, Tracy, Gale Anne and Mark).

Peter Thoreson, my husband was born in 1883, died in 1951 at the age of 68.

James Barney Keeney, my father was born in 1853 died 1929 at 76. Martha my mother born in 1856, died 1942, age 86. I Annabelle was born in 1892.
